• Coping with Visual Impairment

    ·       Orientation and Mobility:

Focus on instructing individuals who are blind or visually impaired to safely and effectively travel through their environment.  This instruction is provided free of charge (as all of our services are) by a trained specialist in Orientation and Mobility.

     ·       Independent Living Classes:

Home Safety:  To help those with visual impairment to live as safely and independently in their homes as long as possible, things that we take for granted such us; safety in the kitchen, light cooking, getting to the mail box safely, clothing identification, marking appliances, shopping.

Communication:  Computer training varies with client desire, i.e.; e-mail, internet surfing, Facebook, Skype.  Computer training is available bi-weekly at the center or at client’s home as needed.  Instruction with magnification programs is available.  We can’t purchase them but we can assist clients in doing so.

Visual Aids Instruction:  We help clients in the use of low vision aids such as magnifiers and closed circuit TV’s which are available in our center for anyone to use.

Personal Management/Financial:  We help our clients to identify bills and coins.  We help them with record keeping, maintaining a checkbook, and banking.

     ·       Peer Support Group:

Members that had attended classes in the past formed a group for the Visually Impaired Community and their caregivers.  They get together once a week to socialize, network, meet, share and manage to have fun while doing so.

    ·       Information and Referral:

Advice for contacting resources in our community.  Call with any questions (sight related or not).

    ·       Audio Books Lending:

For people who can not read even with magnification, talking book machines are available free of charge through the Library of Congress.  We are here to assist in registration.
